Interview x Diogo Zhang – Founder of Flying Ghost

1. What is the start-up story behind The Flying Ghost?

The Story behind our brand is really simple and ordinary, our founder was someone that always looked forward for fashion and streetwear brands, he always tried to innovate and come up with something original, which, in fact, he did with this brand.

2. The Flying Ghost, What are three words that best define it?

Sense Of Belonging.

3. What are you working on lately?

It would be for sure our Autumn and Winter Collection of 2017, it is a collection we’ve put a huge effort on, and we have a lot of expectations in it.

4. What are some recent achievements you guys would like to share?

We would like to share the fact that we had finished producing our new Autumn and Winter Collection of 2017, which is what we had been working on in the recent three months.

5. What’s something that’s always running on your minds?

What we have always a thought on is the sense of belonging, as we are, in majority, a team of Foreigners, we always care about the nations we belong too and the acceptation we can have day by day.

6. How do you spend your downtime?

Are we always at work? Of course not! We do have our breaks and downtimes, we normally spend it by having our personal life, we also have our relationships and family to care about.

7. What would you guys spend a million dollars on?

A Million Dollars would definitely make our life a lot easier, we would probably get ourselves the best and the most popular influencers in this moment, and have a collaboration with them to promote for us.

8. What three pieces of advice would you all give to others when it comes to life and business?

For Beginners, we would advise, one, arrange yourself a Team, it can be your friends or family, but don’t do it alone unless that’s the last option.

Two, try to get inspiration from daily life and give the customers a familiar sense.

Last but not least, try to express our thoughts on the things you sell and express your ideas in a more different way than the normal classic way of thinking.

9. What’s one thing you struggle most when building your own brand?

Struggles are inevitable of creating a serious business, trying to come up with creative ways of spreading the omniscient knowledge of the brand itself has been the biggest we’ve had since day one.



10. What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?

To Fail is Human. Nobody is perfect, neither are we.

Failures are the fundamental thing in learning new things, however, nobody likes to fail when they can achieve perfection just in one hit, and that, is the mindset we all have, try our best… to do our best.

Have we had failures? That is an obvious question, of course we had, and not just a few! The Biggest Failure we’ve had until today, is the act of not organizing well our thoughts leaving the sales to fall behind our effort.

11. What’s a typical day in your life like?

Time passes very quickly in our Team when we are all met up together. In an usual day, we meet up, we have our own moments of laughers, and then, we start up the serious work. When we finish, we all get to live our own personal life until the next day starts.

12. What’s one of the highlighting moment in your career? Why is it so?

Although we’ve had a lot of highlights in our road, the most useful one and the most motivational one is the fact that we had the sights of all Hypebeast Chinese Community, in Portugal, on us for the incredible period of two entire weeks.

13. What stops you from throwing in the towel and giving up during those frustrating days of being in this industry?

Give Up. Two words that are extremely easy to say, to write, to type and to do. And What keeps us from it? We consider that our main motivation is truly the fact that we are a unique brand, and it’s the thought that we can succeed that brings us to look forward and to leave those thoughts away.

14. Biggest risk ever taken?

Indeed, we have taken a lot of risks, but the main one we did was starting this company, we sacrificed a lot to do so, while in the other hand, we don’t consider risks as something negative, but more of something inspiring and something to push ourselves to do better.

15. Who has influenced you most and been your greatest inspiration?

Our Designer gets inspiration from everywhere. He keeps an eye on the most fashionable brands, but also, he tries not to get influenced that much from it as he wants to express his own values on the clothing he designs himself.

16. How do you go about marketing your business or yourself?
What has been your most successful form of marketing?

The most successful form of marketing we had until today, is the influence in Chinese Social Media.

In most cases we give priority in Marketing our business, we try to keep the members of it with more privacy.

17. How do you plan to grow your brand/business further?

Our Plan is always changing due to market’s fast needs and fast desires, but the roots of our plan will always be the influence of Social Media, as it is an important factor for society’s influences, nowadays.

We also find a lot of brands with amazing designs but the ‘spirit’ they have, are not in the level of it. What we have in mind is to set a mix of the spirit that levels our design.

18. Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most?

Our Team definitely finds Supreme an extraordinary brand in the streetwear industry. In the same category, we would also say that many other brands, such as Off-White and Champion are Legends too.

19. How do you achieve balance in your life?

In Our Humble Opinion, since the definition of Balance is different for everyone, Balance is not about something that you achieve, but it’s all about what you sacrifice to not let it slip through your sleeves. In fact, Balance is not common in our team as everybody has their own beliefs.

20. What is the definition of success for you all, and how much of it do you think you guys have achieved?

As I said before, everybody in our team has their own beliefs, we are all unique in this team, and it’s not different in terms of the definition of success, however, what we all agree on, it’s that, even if we fail, even if others don’t consider our brand as a decent one consequently thinking that we are wasting time, and even if our hopes and desires are erased from existence, we will all have a smile on our face and in our hearts.

We will look forward and keep going, not forgetting our principles, and that’s, what we call Success.

21. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?

Everything could happen just in a day, not to mention in years long. This Question really made our team think…and the answer is, we would hope that in 5 years we could be in the top of fashion and streetwear in Europe, and after five more years, we think that World’s Top is our ambition.

22. What’s the first thing you guys would say to the world if all attention was on you now?

If all world’s attention were on us in this precise moment, the first thing we would say is that, do not compare our brand to anyone else’s and do not put your vulgarity thoughts on us, because we are unique, and we are the best.
