Interview x Strangeboy Global

Explore an upcoming unisex streetwear clothing brand hailing from Mexico City, birthed by it’s founder amidst finding a solution for women’s wear without deep pockets.

What is the start up story behind Strangeboy Clothing?

We are two girls that love skating, and in summer 2019 we went on a road trip to check out a new city (Veracruz, Mexico) and skate on the boardwalk, and we got to talking about how our pants had such shallow pockets that they could barely fit our phones, and how girls pants in general didn’t have deep pockets. One of us is a clothing designer, and one of us comes from a business background, and we both loved the same gender-neutral fits, so we decided to start our own brand! That’s how Strangeboy was born.

Strangeboy, What are three words that best define it?

Distinctive, dynamic and fluid

How would you define your creative approach to design?

We are constantly inspired by ordinary objects and everyday color palettes that we see around Mexico, so whenever we see anything we like, we save it to later incorporate it into future designs. We also design based on what material is in stock that we like and we create pieces around that availability so that it’s always fresh and surprising. Our creative process has no defined order; we see it as a puzzle that we put together to at least reveal the finished product both to ourselves and to our audience.

Strangeness breeds richness.

What are you working on lately?

We’re working on selling our first line and getting it to the right people and are planning on launching a crew neck line in early May.  We’d love to try and get in some physical stores this year, but obviously the pandemic has made it hard.

How do you spend your downtime?

Obviously both of us love skating! We also are huge readers, we love books. Other activities include rock climbing, blading, biking, slacklining, and other fun stuff like picnics with friends or just hanging out with some beers at a friend’s house.

What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?

We’ve had some great early lessons about details in the materials, shipping costs, etc. Inventory when you don’t have a physical store has been tough too. But ultimately all mistakes are great lessons to learn from!

What three pieces of advice would you all give to others when it comes to life and business?

  1. Always look for the root cause of any problem so you can address that solution specifically
  2. Get as much feedback as you can from your clients! If you’re not getting feedback constantly, you’re not improving
  3. Have fun – we try to keep it light. At the end of the day this brand and also life are one big adventure, so we know that if we’re not having a good time with it then that’s a red flag that something’s wrong.

What’s one of the highlights or pivotal moments in your brand’s story?

Definitely that skate trip together to Veracruz, because after that trip we cemented the idea to start Strangeboy. We were having some micheladas at a restaurant in Mexico City when we were skating home from work and decided to start doodling random ideas, and in that moment we decided to launch a brand.

Who has influenced you most and been your greatest inspiration?

Women and men from all kinds of sport cultures – not necessarily any specific person, we love the surf culture, the skate culture and also the climbing culture.

What would you spend a million dollars on?

We’d produce way more and invest in more sustainable fabrics like hemp. We’d release one of the dozens of new ideas we have!

How do you plan to grow your brand/business further?

We are looking into getting into some retail stores this year, if the pandemic permits. Other than that we plan to grow organically, partnering with local skaters and bikers!

What is the definition of success for you all, and how much of it do you think you guys have achieved?

Success is getting our clothes to people that love them and making them look and feel great. By that standard, we definitely feel lucky enough to already have some early wins, and we want to of course do even more.

What’s the first thing you guys would say to the world if all attention was on you now?

Strangeness breeds richness
