There are as many dimensions to the traditional Eastern style with the many influences from the West. Hong Kong-based streetwear label CLOT proves this with its latest collection. Entitled “CHINESE HAWAIIAN,” this new offering combines traditional Chinese styles with a tropical vibe courtesy of the beautiful culture of Hawaii.
Combining The East and West Since 2003
Established in 2003, CLOT’s founders, Edison Chen and Kevin Poon aim to mesh the East and West with their various streetwear offerings. They’ve even collaborated with big names such as Nike, Stüssy, and Coca-Cola, among many others. This season is no different as they blend traditional Chinese aesthetics with the unique Western influence of Hawaii.
Don’t Expect Hawaiian Florals!
It’s easy to brush off a “Hawaiian-inspired” collection dominated by floral shirts and palm-tree prints. These styles have, after all, become the catalyst for Hawaiian style defined over the years. However, CLOT put their own approach to highlighting Hawaiian influences in a different way. The free and open vibe of the island shines comes out through the freeform silhouettes and easy tailoring of the pieces.
Traditional Chinese Silhouettes Made Tropical
Speaking of silhouettes, specific shapes within the collection harken back to its Chinese origins. A boxy monochromatic set of separates, for instance, remind of the infamous Mao suit. This time, however, it’s made in more relaxing fabrics to echo the relaxed energy of Hawaii. A white cotton shirt, on the other hand, looks like the top part of a Tang Suit but its organic-looking material evokes a more tropical spirit.
CLOT’s spring 2021 collection, “CHINESE HAWAIIAN” is available now on both Juice Store. Check out all the pieces and share with us your thoughts and reactions in our comment section below!
